This post reminded me of several things:
- I once played Richard Simmons in a skit in high school at our senior “Mother-Daughter Tea” (one of those weird high school tradition for members of “Girls League”, whatever that was.)
- One of my favorite celeb sitings was seeing Richard Simmons in the LA airport. From the back, you knew it was him - poofy hair (check), short shorts (check), & clean white tennies (check). I kind of regret not going over to get my photo taken with him, but I was playing it cool while others mobbed him. Plus, I had no inspirational weight loss story.
- Remember his Deal a Meal system? It seemed fun to me as a kid.
- My high school P.E. teacher made us do the Sweating to the Oldies video on more than one occasion.
- I also once played Zsa Zsa Gabor in a skit at a Lutheran church camp, complete with coconuts stuffed in my counselor’s sports bra. We did a version of the Dating Game show - I (as Zsa Zsa) asked the questions with some sort of accent & the possible date options included Steve Urkel & Bart Simpson.
- Looking at photos of Zsa Zsa, I’m not sure her rack was that big, but we had the coconuts from other camp contest, so why not? Not sure how that flew at church camp, but I guess Lutherans are kinda liberal.
- I never thought of myself as a comic genius, so I’m not sure how I got selected for these roles, but I was either a)seen this way by my peers or b)not afraid of embarrassing myself in public. I’m going with b.
